Wisdom of the Ancestors By Brother Y.J. Yoo, Seoul, Korea (Originally In English) |
---|
This
is what happened during the opening ceremony of the Youngdong Center on the
10th of May 1998. Many VIP's, including the representative of Mayor of Sang
Ju, as well as the people of the local village, were invited for vegetarian
food and to see the opening ceremonies. All of the staff members were busy driving
the visitors up the hill to the Meditation Hall. On the way to the Hall, one
old man with a VIP badge exclaimed, "Do you know what my ancestors called this
valley? They called this place 'hae gol.' It was called Hae gol."
He continued, "Do you
know 'hae'? 'Hae' means sun. It is a pure Korean word. And do you understand
'gol'? 'Gol' means valley. Our ancestors' words always have wisdom, but sometimes
it takes a while to understand. Now I know. I understand their wise words."
"What?" The driver
asked the old man what he meant.
He answered emotionally,
"The legend says that one day when the sun rises over this valley, thousands
of people from countless countries will be gathered in this valley. It has come
true."
"Sun Valley? It's a
good name," said an officer from the city hall who was accompanying them.
The old man said proudly,
"That's why people from Asia, America, India, and Europe -- all over the world,
have come together here in this valley!"
When one Korean fellow
initiate heard this story, he cried joyfully, "Everything was prophesied by
our ancestors!"
The actual official
name of the village is "Ho Um Li," which means "Happy Sound" and this is the
"Sun Valley"! A perfect combination of light and sound for our new Center!
