Story World - Reflections on Loving the Silent Tears: The Musical

A Musical Journey
Brings Spiritual Growth

By Sister Shirley Liao, Taipei, Formosa (Originally in Chinese)

Having worked in  the field of children’s music education for many years, I immediately decided to participate when I heard news of another musical based on Master’s poems. After making the necessary arrangements I traveled to Los Angeles to join the event’s reception team and serve the attendees. As I was flying alone, I brought my ukulele to keep me company since it was light and easy to carry. I also thought it could help create joyful moments with other initiates.

The day before the show, the working teams had a chance to watch the rehearsal. I was impressed by the politeness and respect the director showed to the performers, as well as their eager cooperation. During the break, one of my favourite musicians, Emmy Award-winning composer for the musical, Doug Katsaros, happened to walk by me, so I greeted him happily and he cordially welcomed me to visit the United States.

The song “Talking to a Stone Buddha” was extremely soul-stirring. When I listened to it performed by Hong Kong pop star Kay Tse onstage, my eyes filled with tears. Later, I heard Master sing the song on a CD* and I cried even more. No matter how many times I hear it, I always love “Talking to a Stone Buddha.”

Ukulele

In addition to having many amazing experiences while participating in the musical, I was also pleased to play my ukulele and sing with working-team members under the California sun. Once, before some mainland Chinese initiates were taken to the airport by bus, we had a joyful party under bright moonlight at 3:00 AM. Thus, during my Loving the Silent Tears journey I grew spiritually and also made many new friends with the help of my ukulele.
