Street cleaners' fund running
dry
The
Taipei Municipal Bureau of Environmental Protection asked the public for
donations to help families of street cleaners who were killed or injured at
work.
Five
street cleaners died and two were brain dead, while a total of 110 were reported
to be injured in the first half of the year, according to the bureau.
The
emergency fund to assist the families of dead or injured street cleaners has
almost been used up. The bureau asked the public to donate money to the bureau's
postal account 13942221 to help the victims' families.
Drunk
driving and speeding were to be blamed for over 50 percent of street cleaners'
deaths or injuries.
According
to the statistics from the bureau, a total of 348 street cleaners were killed in
1993 on the streets, while 204 died when they were on duty last year.
