COSTA RICA

No Military in Costa Rica

By Laura Chen, San Jose (Originally in Spanish)

In December 1, 1948, President José Figueres Ferrer of Costa Rica abolished the national army after victory in the country’s civil war. Thus funds from the federal budget that were previously dedicated to the military could be used for security, education and culture. Then in 1986, President Oscar Arias Sánchez declared December 1 “Military Abolition Day” in Costa Rica.
