AUSTRALIA

Australia's Government Sets
a Positive Example

Compiled by the Australian News Group (Originally in English)

Over the years the Commonwealth of Australia has implemented many beneficial programs for its citizens. As a result, Australians in general enjoy a high standard of living, good health and a first-rate medical care system that funds universal medical services and pharmaceuticals, public hospitals and senior care facilities and community care for the aged. The Australian Government is also the major source of funding for health research and for the training of healthcare professionals and technicians.

Moreover, in March 2006 Australia implemented the WorkChoices Act, which details workers’ rights regarding minimum wages, annual leave, personal/caregiver’s leave, parental leave, maximum working hours, protection against unlawful termination, joining and being represented by a union and lawful industrial action when negotiating an agreement.

And with regard to assisting its younger citizens, the Government has recently begun a TV campaign encouraging children to exercise at least one hour a day. Even the leader of Australia’s opposition political party, Mr. Kim Beazley, fully supported this campaign, saying, "The most important investment a country makes is in the healthy future of its children."

Also, since 1974 the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) has provided care and assistance to developing countries mainly in the Asia-Pacific area but also in Africa and the Middle East. Thus, more than 58 million needy people have benefited. For instance, in the Pacific region, the agency provides scholarships for post-secondary level study at regional education institutions, and through AusAID’s health programs large numbers of children are vaccinated against disease. Moreover, the Agency’s engineering programs supply water to almost 500,000 people in Africa.

Hopefully, Australia’s leaders will continue such enlightened, constructive activities and the like in order to further benefit its own citizens and those of other countries around the world for generations to come.
