Love in Action

Report from London, U. K.

(Originally in English)

On December 5, 2001, London Center initiates began a campaign to supply food and thermal clothing to the city's homeless residents.

Thermal hats, socks, biscuits, and drinks were purchased wholesale and packaged into 100 shopping bags. On the first night, approximately 50 gift packs were distributed around London's West End. After speaking with the homeless, the working group became aware of more pertinent material needs, such as sleeping bags, underwear, and clean clothing. Most of the homeless people expressed their gratitude simply for the attention shown to them. One expressed a keen interest in the Quan Yin Method after learning about our organization and its spiritual practice. He sincerely stated his desire to come to our Center and added thoughtfully, "And when I come, I have to wear my new socks."

The initiates later purchased several sleeping bags and items of thermal clothing, and distributed them to the homeless in other parts of London on December 19. The working group focused on areas with concentrated pockets of homeless people, most of whom congregate in subways and small alcoves in the city's underground train stations.

On December 21, approximately 30 sleeping bags were presented to a mobile soup kitchen that catered to west London's homeless community. This service is established during the winter months by the UK charity, Shelter. Although the kitchen supplies sleeping bags to the needy, some are inevitably lost or damaged after long-term use. Through Master's perfect arrangement, the supply of sleeping bags we provided coincided with the organization's unusual shortage of them at that moment.

On December 23, two days before Christmas, London initiates visited a day center for the homeless to distribute Christmas presents of warm clothing. The center is open daily from 2:00-6:00 PM to provide a place for those sleeping in the streets to have a warm meal, wash, and relax. Each resident was personally given a present bearing a "Merry Christmas" wish. The homeless showed obvious delight, knowing that they had not been forgotten during the festive holiday season.

By the end of the London Center's Christmas campaign for the homeless, our volunteers felt that with Master's blessing and guidance, everything went smoothly, and were happy to have had the opportunity to learn and grow. Thank You, Master, for teaching us to walk the way of love.
