Love In Action

<A Child's Letter>

A Heartwarming Lunch

By Lin Jun-yan of Class 3C, Hualien, Formosa

I am a third grader at the Hualien County Hsincheng Junior High School. Since my childhood, I have lived under the loving care of my father and have been blessed with a happy life.

Unfortunately, in May of 1997, my father was hospitalized for tumor treatment, and our family suffered a financial crisis. Initially, we thought that father would soon recuperate, but he was admitted to the hospital again in August. The following month, we learned that he was in the terminal stage of leukemia. We concealed our deep sorrow and put on a cheerful look while taking care of him. Despite our intensive care, father left us after forty days, leaving the whole family mourning in grief.

My older sister went out to work in July to earn our tuition fees. I too tried to make some contribution to the family and requested permission from the teacher that I go home for lunch instead of buying it at school, so that I could save some money. After inquiring about my situation, the teacher arranged a free meal for me so I could enjoy a warm and delicious lunch each day. Since then, I have not had to go hungry again, and mother does not have to worry about my lunches. We are truly grateful to the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association for its relief fund, which includes NT$1,000 (US$35) for my lunches every month and NT$2,000 (US$70) for the family every three months.

Although three months have passed since father left us, mother is still living in sorrow and cannot work as normal. So, the family remains in financial difficulty and we continue to rely on outside assistance. Life is full of dramatic changes, and I am blessed to have received help on this difficult journey. Apart from being wholeheartedly grateful, I also tell myself that if I am able in the future, I will let my family live comfortably and also help others who are less fortunate than we are, so that they can feel the warm love of society in times of need and despair.
