I Was Not Alone

In The Land Of Egypt

By Sister Initiate Lin Hsiang, Taipei, Formosa

Due to my visa and flight arrangements, I had to stay in Egypt while waiting for a connecting flight. Being in a hurry before I began my journey, I did not have time to arrange any accommodation there.

It was four o'clock in the morning and pitch black outside when I arrived in Cairo. I went through the Customs formalities. With eyebrows tied in knots, I wondered what I should do next! Despite being a traveler from afar in this world-famous tourist spot, I had no feelings of excitement.

At that moment, a gentleman came forward and asked if he could be of help. I told him that I wanted to look for a hotel, and emphasized that I could not afford one that was too expensive! Smiling and nodding his head, he said that he could help me. So he accompanied me to the doors of the airport and found a taxi. I did not know what he said in his native tongue to the driver but the driver kept nodding and smiling. Then he came over to me to help me with my luggage. As I left, the kind gentleman waved good-bye.

Not long later, I arrived at a hotel. It was not a new one but it was clean. I breathed a sigh of relief, happily unloaded my luggage, and went to the front desk to register. When the manager of the hotel saw me, he pointed at the brooch with a photo of Master that I was wearing on my coat and said that he knew the lady, and that several people wearing brooches with photos of the same lady stayed in his hotel the year before. We smiled at each other, and suddenly it felt like I was an old customer visiting again.

Egypt was no longer a strange place to me because You, Master, were there too. You connect people, no matter how far or how long they have been apart.
