Caring for the Flood Affected in Ghana
By Accra Relief Team (Originally in English)

Flood Relief in the Akim West District

In late July 2011, devastating rain and storms caused extensive flooding that damaged property, farms and houses and displaced approximately 12,500 inhabitants along the Birim River in Ghana’s Eastern Region. On hearing news of the disaster, Supreme Master Ching Hai provided US$10,000 in relief funds and sent Her love and prayers to those affected.

On September 27, a relief team from our Accra Center arrived in the badly damaged area of Kade, in the administrative quarter of West Akim district, to distribute urgently needed items. Along with officials from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and members of the local media, our team travelled to six flood-affected communities in the district and distributed food, blankets, poly mats and clothing. The recipients were delighted to receive the supplies, and expressed their gratitude to Master for Her generous gifts.

Mr. Emmanuel Aboagye Osae, the District Chief Executive and a long-time environmental-protection advocate, expressed support for Master’s work and invited our Association to collaborate in an effort to raise public awareness about the causes and effects of climate change.

Flood Relief in Accra

At the end of October, floods following torrential rains swept through Ghana’s capital, Accra, displacing thousands and leaving residents marooned on rooftops. Many buildings were destroyed and power outages became widespread as major roads and bridges were submerged.

On November 19 our local Association members used Master’s loving contribution of US$10,000 to purchase and deliver emergency supplies to needy residents in the communities of Weija 1, Akwasa Electoral Area (Weija 2) and Sowutuom, with the help of Mr. Mamud Azumah, Deputy District Coordinator of NADMO. Mr. Azumah thanked Master for Her generosity and said that Hers was the first aid that his district had received since the disaster occurred. The recipients were joyful to receive the items and sent Master their best wishes.

Our relief team members were grateful for Master’s blessing and protection, which had allowed them to successfully complete the distribution work despite unfavorable weather conditions. They also prayed that such calamities would soon be alleviated through humanity’s more considerate care of our shared planetary home.
