Warm Concern for the Underprivileged
in Cold Winter

Report compiled by Formosa News Groups (Originally in Chinese)

Taipei

As waves of cold fronts caused temperatures to drop, local fellow initiates, charged with Master's love, contributed winter clothes to community service centers in Taipei's Datung, Zhongshan, Zhongzheng and Wanhua districts, the Municipal Chung Hsing Hospital, and the Taipei County Volunteer Association. We also contributed sanitary supplies and medicine as per the needs of homeless people in the different areas.

On January 19, Golden Year 4 (2007), fellow initiates delivered the first batch of warm clothes to the Datung Community Welfare Center, where we were received by Acting Supervisor Miss Tsai Ming-zhuan and Mr. Zhang. We also prepared the News magazines and Alternative Living tablemats for volunteer workers to further encourage their effort. "Community service is an arduous task," said Miss Tsai, a dedicated counselor for the homeless for many years. In addition to a shortage of material resources, social workers also have to deal with other problems such as suicide and depression. As a result, they become vulnerable to be influenced by negative emotions over the years. She strongly agreed that Supreme Master Ching Hai's teachings bring about spiritual elevation and are the best medicines to heal the diseases of the mind and soul. These angels committed to helping the ailing society have come to realize that no amount of effort or sacrifice could completely eliminate social problems and the only solution is spiritual elevation and awakening.

On January 23, fellow initiates visited the Taipei County Volunteer Association in Banciao with another batch of warm clothes. Here, we were warmly greeted by director Ms. Huang Mei-ying, who now looked younger and had become more energetic after practicing the Convenient Method. While repeatedly thanking Master for Her boundless love, she said that our contributions best met the needs of street friends. The clothes would be distributed at a year-end dinner, where such services as medical diagnosis and employment counseling would be made available to help street friends stand on their feet and start a new life.

On January 25, fellow initiates arrived at the Wanhua Community Service Center with 18 boxes containing 100 pairs of trousers, 200 thick coats, 108 pairs of kung fu shoes, and sanitary supplies. The contribution was received by Division Chief Zhong Pei-zhen. According to Mr. Zhang Xian-zhong, a social worker at the center, among contributions from various groups, those from The Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association were the most welcomed. The clothes were clean, categorized, and useful as fellow initiates had first contacted the center to discuss their needs. The center was grateful to our group for extending sincere concern to the street friends continuously for many years. The staff said that on every occasion they could feel Master's love and the sincerity of fellow initiates from our Association. Only when we work hand in hand to help the underprivileged people would society become better.

We are glad that we have delivered warm clothes to street friends in metropolitan Taipei in time before the next cold current arrives. Hopefully they can feel Master's heartwarming love and concern through the loving hands of social workers.

Chiayi

At midnight January 5, Golden Year 4 (2007), fellow initiates from the Chiayi Center drove out to visit homeless friends at their frequent haunts, bringing warm clothes, hot vegetarian soup, Master's sample books, Alternative Living leaflets, and especially cordial smiles. In this cold winter, our warmth and love were happily received by street friends, some of whom immediately started reading Master's publications.

Tainan

As winter set in and the new year approached, the Tainan Center organized a “Joyous New Year” activity for about a hundred impoverished single-parent families sustained by the Tainan County Family Helper Project. Local initiates exquisitely prepared a small concert, parents and children's games, and a sumptuous vegetarian feast. Each family received a New Year gift package while a lucky draw was held with a hundred prizes ranging from home appliances to quilts. Twenty of the households in urgent need of help each received a relief cash fund of NT$5,000 (about US$150), so that they could celebrate the new year. Many reporters came to cover this event held on January 28, Golden Year 4 (2007) in the main hall of Tainan County's Nanxin Junior High School.

Among the guests was a single mother of three children. Her whole family was vegetarian. She told us that she felt a very strong energy when she arrived at the venue. When she saw Master's photo, she thought it looked very familiar because Master had come to see her in her dream the night before, wearing precisely the same clothes. The mother was extremely touched.

Mr. Zhou Ming-quan, director of the Family Helper Project, together with twenty children from the beneficiary households, presented a Letter of Appreciation to The Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association on behalf of the project. Director Zhou repeatedly expressed his gratitude to Master for Her grace and benefaction, and wished Her a very happy New Year.

Yilan

On December 27, Golden Year 3 (2006), fellow initiates from the Yilan Center prepared many gift packages containing vegetarian food, heat packs, News magazines, Master's sample books, and Alternative Living leaflets, for the Street Friends Service Center established by Lotung's Ren-an Foundation. The purpose was to convey Master's love and our concern to the street friends. Some elderly people offered us tea and helped unload the packages. We were deeply touched by their goodwill.
