We went through the night, meditating for peace, with a candle lighting our beautiful Master’s picture, as our Master lights the way for us on our life’s journey. When the candle was finished, the night was too!

We had prepared a heart-shaped cake and human-shaped ‘manalas,’ little cakes from our region here for Saint Nicolas, that symbolize rebirth. Even our vegetarian cats have eaten pieces of them.

With the children we sang the Hymn to Universal Humankind, which is one of the versions for the ‘Ode to the Joy’ from Beethoven’s 9th symphony, the European hymn.

 

Hymn to Universal Humankind, That cheerfulness calling us Will welcome us in its lightness! That beauty and joy will wake up Under it’s wing! No more hatred on the Earth Let happiness be reborn! All human beings are brothers When joyfulness unites their hearts!
	People of remote cities Which shine every evening, Do you feel your souls filled With one ardent and noble hope? Do you struggle for justice? Are you already victors? Ah! That one hymn will resound To your hearts blending with ours.

Whenever the spirit enlightens you, Speak to us in your turn. Tell us that everything progresses Towards peace and towards love. Tell us that nature Will only be joy and flowers, And that the city of the future Will forget the time of tears.

We also read a poem that Soléanne, a ten year-old half-initiate, wrote alone some days before, that seemed to fit exactly with the theme of the night:

Ching Hai is a spiritual Master She is the most beautiful who calls us She is the source of love That reigns already nowadays… Oh, all these days and years Spent in appeal For the end of war Which appears on the Earth...! And now... This gift! Infinity Thank You!!!

As stated at the end of the Hymn to Universal Humankind, we want to forget the time of tears, but it was a time for tears of happiness!
