Implanting the Vegetarian Ideal
through Multiple Channels
Compiled by Taipei News Group (Originally in Chinese)

On June 25, Golden Year 3 (2006), after an overnight meditation, fellow initiates from Taipei Center launched a large-scale flyer distribution activity in Lu Zhou, San Chong, Tu Cheng, San Xia, Mu Zha Zoo, Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall, etc. In the following month of July, they went to the Zhao Ru Elderly Care Center and various examination centers where many students go for the national examinations, to promote the Alternative Living ideal. These activities achieved the excellent results described in the following sections.

Mu Zha Zoo

When a group of fellow initiates were distributing the Alternative Living flyers at the zoo, they saw a huge crowd swarming in. To inspire morale and boost enthusiasm, they quickly lined up, shouting out sensational slogans such as, “Love the animals - Be vegetarians! Love the Earth - Be vegetarians! …” After calling out these slogans for three rounds, some tourists spontaneously joined in with their own heartfelt voices! At that moment, the atmosphere was very high and exciting. Because of the hot weather, all the promotional items were soon taken at the request of the visitors, including the Alternative Living fans and pencil pads.

Cheng Tian Zen Temple

A team of fellow initiates heading for Tu Cheng and San Xia in Taipei County first gathered at the entrance of Cheng Tian Zen Temple in Tu Cheng. They then took different distribution routes, including the entrances and exits of all hiking paths in the mountains and all bus stops, so that every person who came for morning exercise could get the compassionate gift of the Alternative Living flyer.

Marketplaces in San Xia

Fellow initiates distributed flyers, pencil pads and fans around the marketplace and on the main streets. Attracted by the Alternative Living T-shirts and hats worn by the fellow initiates, many shoppers took a closer look at their costumes, and stopped walking to read the contents of the flyer. It was hot under the summer sun, so people were eager to get the pencil pads and the fans printed with the message of divine love from God. All the Alternative Living items that initiates had brought were soon gone.

Zhao Ru Elderly Care Center

In July, Formosa was hit by summer heat waves. On July 7, when it was anticipated that the Zhao Ru Elderly Care Center in Taipei City would have several hours of power blackout in the afternoon, fellow initiates brought 200 Alternative Living fans to the Care Center in the morning. It seemed like sending a timely breeze to the elderly. The sight of the beautiful fans was met with big smiles and expressions of delight by the staff and seniors at the Center. Superintendent Tsai of the Center compassionately passed the fans to the elderly, and earnestly explained to them that the fans contained the message of the healthy diet. He told the crowd: “There will be a power blackout this afternoon. So, the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association has brought these fans for you. They represent the love from Supreme Master Ching Hai to you all.”

University Examination

On July 1, a three-day nationwide university examination began. The Taipei Center launched an activity to go to the various examination centers and distribute Alternative Living flyers, fans, table mats and document folders. The cute design of the fan was highly favored, and almost everyone happily walked away with one. In addition to the fans, the table mats and the document folders were also popular items. Fellow initiates distributed these together with the flyers, and many people were very happy to accept them. During the three-day examination period, they distributed 17,990 fans, 4,510 table mats, 5,670 binders and 47,300 flyers. Fellow initiates attribute their success in fulfilling the dissemination tasks in such a short time to God’s blessing.

Civil Service General Examination

On July 6 and 10, the days when a general examination for government employment was taking place, a group of fellow initiates went to the examination center to disseminate the Alternative Living message. It only took a short while to distribute all the flyers, fans and folders they had brought! While distributing the items, fellow initiates wished every exam participant an ideal grade.

Large Posters and Backlit Signs

In addition to the distribution of flyers and other promotional items, the Taipei Center also planned to set up large posters at certain spots. The design of the poster was recently completed, and the posters will soon be placed at major traffic intersections. Fellow initiates also designed backlit signs that remain illuminated day and night. The signs display Master’s photo combined with the Alternative Living message; their showy design attracts pedestrians to stop and read the content. Fellow initiates hope that through these multifarious channels, the vegetarian ideal roots deeply into every corner of Formosa.
