Master's Words

A Lesson

About Ego

Spoken By Supreme Master Ching Hai,
Hsihu Center, Formosa
Feb. 25, 1996 (Originally In Chinese)

Some people are intelligent and talented; that's why I begin using them to do work. But just because they experience a small test, they leave and think that they are great, without knowing where their greatness is. They then sell themselves short by applying their talents and intelligence to worldly work. They make several thousand or tens of thousands of dollars, only enough to take care of several people, or drive a luxury car; that's all. They don't know that working with Master can benefit many, many people. They don't even know this, yet still think of themselves as being great. I know that you have certain ability, and thus force you to finish an assignment in a very short time, just to stimulate your potential power, if I explain everything plainly to you, it won't be as effective; thus I just use this tactic to teach you.

If you fail whenever you face a test, then leave our group. Then it's not very good. If those who possess some talents and intelligence all leave and work outside, and the ones who stay can only plant grass and flowers, so I can not find a successor. You Chinese people can only be saved by other Chinese. Otherwise, there is no longer any hope; there are still so many Chinese to be helped.

The Chinese of course have their good qualities; for example, they are very hospitable, offering everything they have to their guests. But that is only one aspect of having good qualities, and biased toward the material aspect without high spiritual ideals.

No foreigner can save the Chinese people; I have never heard of any throughout history. Some lamas and masters indeed have been 10 Formosa, but they just made some commotion and excitement without liberating anyone.

They do have some magical powers, like flying above the ground twenty to thirty centimeters and remaining there for about a dozen minutes. But this requires a lot of long, hard practice to achieve. Why treat yourselves so harshly? You can simply take an airplane. However, it is also of use to let scientists realize that besides material scientific technology, there also exists mental power.

In Tibet, many yoga practitioners can fly in the air and remain there for a long time. Every time they land on the ground they need iron chains to tie themselves down; otherwise, they soar into the sky, and are not able to stay on the ground to eat. Also every time they want to land, they have to wait in the air until their energy is exhausted.

I heard that a kind of car that can fly in the air has been invented. I hope that it will be available on the market as early as possible. I don't like to sit in a car all the time and then crawl on the ground.

Because I speak Chinese, and look Chinese, I can thus save some people. I can speak Chinese because of the situation. When I first came to Formosa, because my interpreter got married, and I was not able to find a suitable person to translate, I had to learn Chinese myself. If one is trapped in that situation, one will naturally learn it.

So you should not be afraid of work; the more we work, the more intelligent and talented we will become; even though we can't serve other people, it is still beneficial for ourselves if we become intelligent and talented.

The Chinese people protect their own group too much. They think that everything should be of benefit for the Chinese. This is good also, but too narrow minded.

Bodhidharma came to China, but he couldn't save many people, so he faced the wall for nine years.

The Fifth Patriarch Hong Ren was Chinese like you and had five thousand disciples. When asked how many disciples he had, he said that he had none; Huineng only, and he was Vietnamese, not Chinese! The majority of his disciples had no high ideals, and their purpose was impure.

The Fifth Patriarch passed the mantle and alms bowl to Huineng; other disciples did not listen to their master's instruction, attempted to snatch the mantle and alms bowl back for the Chinese disciples, and even wanted to kill Huineng. Even their master was not able to control them, so he secretly hid Huineng.

Linji was also Chinese like you, and had over ten thousand disciples. When others asked him: " How many disciples do you have?" He answered: "Only four or five." He dared not scold disciples, or drive them away. He had many people around him, like bandits; and they were not necessarily vegetarians.

I have been to many spiritual practice ashrams, and found that most of the masters were not in charge. Thus in some ashrams, the disciples do inappropriate things publicly in the ashrams like smoking and so on. For a person who has already obtained the Truth, it is very painful to have to take care of such worldly matters.

I know that there is a master from a certain ashram, who hides himself away from others, and even refuses to see his disciples. Even like this, he still has to take the karma, gets sick, and suffers greatly.

Shakyamuni was too lucky. His disciples all begged for their own food and took care of themselves. Other people made offerings to His ashram, took good care of them, and then invited Him to give lectures. At that time, most of the Indian people were vegetarians and spiritual practitioners, and respected monks very much.

Shakyamuni only had with Him a few disciples at His side. The first from the five disciples had been a hideous ghost in his previous life, who had eaten His flesh. The rest of them were also blood sucking ghosts in previous lives who had sucked His blood, another was a king who persecuted him before, and so on. It was only because Shakyamuni Buddha vowed to save them, so don't live under the illusion that they were all reincarnations of some great bodhisattvas descending to the Earth.

It's the same with the people around me. You know it by looking at yourselves. When doing Master's work, you not only can't do it well, but also obstruct it. This is because of the bad affinity you developed with me, and the influence from your previous lives.

The Quan Yin messengers I sent out were all those I didn't look at and teach directly; thus I let them learn their own lessons outside, and let the situations in the society educate them. So don't indulge in fantasy, worship them, bow to them, offer alms to them, or even take them for a drive around the town.

Some people are very capable of mistreating others minds, letting them give rise to violent thoughts. If you ask them do something, they will do something wrong here and something wrong there, do something with no beginning or ending, or they will decide things themselves which upset your plan.

For example, I asked a person. to type something that was only five pages in length. Every time he sent me the finished copy having corrections in one place, he would have made a mistake in another which was originally correct. When He sent me the corrected copy again he made a mistake in a third place. It would happen over and over again like this; I have accumulated the copies into a big book now. It not only wasted my money, but also my time and energy. I have not slept for three nights in order to teach him how to type, but it is still not done yet.

Now you know why some people outside beat their wives. The masses criticize husbands for using violence. But in fact, they were pushed to the extreme. Or in some murder cases, the killers were treated most unjustly, because they were mistreated to such an extreme that they lost their minds.

I am in the same situation. So then you ask, "Why does Master scold people? She is so fierce!" Now you know who was really fierce. You see the big pile that I just burned. That is what they mistyped, and it is only a part of it.

I have spent almost a million NT dollars for equipment and computers for them, but the electrical brain does not help the human bone. They still made decisions themselves and did not ask me if it was okay before they printed a lot of copies. Even though I did not say anything, why couldn't you communicate with me and ask me if it was okay? There would not be a problem if you did so. And also, in case I forget anything, if you remind me, I will be very happy.

Now these copies are all useless; they are wasted; they are sentient beings' money. You are all wasting your merit. If you use up all your merit, you can not stay here and practice. Some people could not live here any longer and had to leave. Don't ask me why. You should ask yourself, then you yourself will know.

The monthly expenses for personal snacks for some people has been more than ten thousand NT dollars. Did you spend this much money for snacks before coming to live here? In addition, eating too many snacks is not good, because we will not be able to eat much during regular meals. You can not eat all day long. You should let your stomach have a rest. It is good for your body. Do not pay too much attention to the material aspect; because it will obstruct your spiritual practice. If you use too much in this world, you will have to pay it back. The expenses for your monthly necessities keeps increasing, so I asked, not because I am stingy. Several thousand or ten thousand NT dollars can keep a family running for a month.

Sometimes when we help others, we do not have to help them a lot or for a long time but just in their most difficult times, which can last one day or one hour. We can only help them to pass that time period, and then they will be able to stand up and take care of themselves. It does not necessarily require a lot of money or constant care. They will be fine after their karma has past. Therefore, do not waste money casually, because it can be used to help many people.

I am an artist. I will be annoyed if I have to take care of too many things in the material aspect, and also can not find anyone to help me to take care of these things. If I take care of too many material things, I will not be able to take care of as much spiritually.
