Ramos grants 5,000 permanent residence

Manila, Philippines, June 10 — President Fidel Ramos has granted per-manent residence to 5.000 Vietnamese who entered this country before 1979.

The order, issued Friday, does not apply to about 2,600 refugees at a camp on Palawan Island who came to the Philippines after the Dec. 31,1978 cutoff date.

They are to be sent back to Vietnam by the end of the year, although most say they refuse to leave.

The order also includes an undetermined number of Vietnamese who said their fathers were Filipino soldiers who served with U.S.-led forces dur¬ing the Vietnam War.


Supreme Master Ching Hai sent a letter to President Ramos and the Philippines Government, congratulating them on their Independent Day and for their multitude of achievements. And above all, thanking them on behalf the 5000 Au Lac refugees, who were granted permanent residency.

Dear President Ramos and Government,

Congratulations to the honorable President and your Goverrwtenf on Independent day for your great success of international recognition.

It is obvious that since you assumed presidency, you and your Government have achieved heightened levels of humanity as seen In your contributions and efforts towards your people and cquntfy. Through your efforts you have won International recognition. In jiist a few shcfrt years, under your wise leadership, the Philippines hus achieved unprecedented success in all aspects: political and economic stability, Increased exports and foreign investments, decreased inflation, etc., contributing to an Increase of more domestic jobs and a booming economy.

The Philippines, being the oldest democracy in the East, has accomplished an economic miracle in all of Asia, and has achieved the respect and praise from all over the world. Please accept our sincere congratulations and best wishes!

We would also like to thank you for your compassionate decision of granting 5,000 Vietnamese rejugees permanent residency in your beloved country. Moved by your virtuous action, it would be d greal honor for us to have you and/or a representative of your country cotne to our Center in Formosa, R.O.C., at which time we would take the opportunity to express our utmost gratitude toward you and the Philippine Government in a more formal award. If you should accept our invitation, please be so kind as to send us all the particulars concerning the arrival date and the name of the representative, and we will gladly take care of all the necessary arrangenvent including air tickets, lodging etc...
