Côte d’Ivoire and Liberia

Bringing Food and Comfort
to the Flood Affected

By Benin News Group (Originally in English)

On June 24, 2010, Abidjan, the largest city of Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) endured landslides and flooding caused by ongoing heavy rain. Sadly, 11 perished in a disadvantaged area while other residential districts also suffered considerable damage from the inundation. On the previous day, neighboring Liberia was similarly affected by unceasing downpours that flooded suburbs throughout its capital city of Monrovia, displacing hundreds of families whose houses were rendered uninhabitable and all their belongings lost.

Thank-you letters from the Mayor of Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire, Mr. Gbamnan Djidan Jean Félicien and the Mayor of Monrovia in Liberia, Ms. Mary T. Broh

Conveying Her heartfelt condolences and prayers, Supreme Master Ching Hai contributed a total of US$15,000 to assist the relief work carried out in July by our Benin Association members who brought large amounts of food to both Abidjan and Monrovia. The mayors of both cities expressed sincere thanks for Master’s humanitarian gesture. Mayor Mary T. Broh wrote, “These items (rice and oil) will be distributed to the needy citizens of Monrovia who were recent flood victims. We at the Monrovia City Hall take this opportunity to extend appreciation on their behalf.”

Our hearts go out to the gentle people of Côte d’Ivoire and Liberia, as we send our sincere sympathies to those who lost loved ones. May such unfortunate consequences be eliminated as humanity joins in immediate efforts to restore planetary harmony through more compassionate ways of living.
