Residing in Toledo, Ohio, 12-year-old Zach McGuire is seemingly just an ordinary all-American boy, but he possesses an extraordinary heart of generosity and kindness. In 2005, following the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina which ravaged New Orleans, Louisiana, Zach, who was only 6 years old at the time, set up a Kool-Aid drink stand and raised a total of $480 to assist with the relief work. He was named Citizen of the Month by the Mayor of Toledo for his benevolent act. Two years later, when disaster struck Findlay, Ohio, Zach set up his drink stand once again, with the sign “Kool-Aid for Flood Aid,” to help those affected by the flood. Then after wildfires raged in California, Zach, by selling hot cocoa, raised over $1,000 to aid the victims.

Recently, Zach’s own family has been affected by the economic downturn. Upon knowing that his father, Thomas McGuire, a licensed contractor had been unemployed for a time, he said, “Dad I want to help. I’ve been blessed with all these toys and I would like to sell them and help out with paying the bills around the house.” He sold some $2,000 worth of his toys, including his “Thomas the Tank Train Set.” CNN News covered his story.

Touched by Zach’s altruistic deeds and loving kindness to strangers in need and his own family, he was presented with a Letter of Salute and a gift of US$3,000 from Supreme Master Ching Hai on November 22, Golden Year 6 (2009). Master wrote, “Your amazing ability to rise to a challenge when necessary is what true heroes are made of young Zach! … We wish your wise words would reverberate throughout the world, especially nowadays when humanity must unite to love, protect, and support each other.” In addition, Zach was given Master’s international #1 best-selling books, The Dogs in My Life, The Birds in My Life, and The Noble Wilds, along with various DVDs and CDs.

Upon receiving this recognition and the gifts, our young hero said, “I would like to say thank you to Supreme Master Ching Hai for this wonderful gift and I hope this check helps us out with whatever we need.” Mr. McGuire also expressed his gratitude to Supreme Master Ching Hai for Her support, saying that it was all a blessing from God. Zach’s goodwill and spirit of sacrifice are truly a noble example for children and adults everywhere.
