Diet and Farming Change to Help Save the Planet

By Dublin News Group (Originally in English)

[Dublin] “Mom, why do we kill animals for food?” When a mother was persistently confronted by this question by her children who refused to eat meat, she began to wonder if she was doing the right thing. Now, she thanks them for pushing her to remove meat from their dining table.

This wonderful story warmed the hearts of the Dublin initiates who were spreading the SOS Global Warming message at the Mind, Body, Spirit & Yoga International Festival held from October 25 to 27, Golden Year 5 (2008).

Their hearts soared with optimism when two cattle farmers accepted their advice on switching to cultivating crops to reduce global warming. It’s the most powerful thing cattle farmers can do to help the planet! Their decision marked a promising step in the right direction for Ireland, which has a large livestock industry that accounts for nearly 6% of their gross domestic product.

The fellow initiates sincerely wish all farmers will realize the harmful consequences of raising livestock for food and instead rely upon the sustainable livelihood of plant-based agriculture.

Being Veg: An Early New Year’s Resolution

By Dublin News Group (Originally in English)

[Belfast] On November 9, Golden Year 5 (2008), the Dublin initiates participated in the Complementary Therapies and Natural Health Fair in Belfast, the largest event of its kind to be held in Northern Ireland. About 90 exhibitors brought a phenomenally rich variety of complementary approaches to health as well as providing green living products for sale.

Master’s photo and the “Be Veg - Go Green! Save our Planet!” banner attracted numerous visitors. Over 1,500 SOS DVDs, SOS flyers and veggie writing pens were distributed at the fair and in downtown Belfast. A majority of visitors said they would try to be more vegetarian as a new start in the new year. Many people who had been to the Mind, Body, Spirit & Yoga International Festival in Dublin in October said they now watch Supreme Master TV frequently. They realize that being vegetarian was the single most important action they could do to save their lives and the planet!

Calling All Youth:
Exert Pressure on Society for Climate Action!

By Dublin News Group (Originally in English)
The Minister for the Environment, John Gormley

[Cork] On November 14, Golden Year 5 (2008), the Dublin initiates attended the “Partnership for Change” - Climate Change Conference in Cork. The conference was attended by 300 people with 30 distinguished guest speakers including politicians, environmentalists, climate change activists, and students from universities and secondary schools.

Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, head of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), opened the conference, addressing the audience with a video. He said that young people “must start to exert pressure on the rest of society to start taking the right set of actions so they will not have to lose out in the future.” Towards the closing of his speech, he strongly emphasized people turning vegetarian, which would be more economical and less severe on our natural resources and greatly reduce global warming.

The Minister for the Environment, John Gormley, gave a speech immediately after Dr. Pachauri. He thanked and acknowledged Dr. Pachauri and said to the audience: “Going vegetarian may be a good idea to curb climate change!” Professor Hugh Montgomery, Director of the Institute for Human Health and Performance at University College London, also recommended eating less red meat as a solution to reducing climate warming and lessening the risk of cancer.

The final speaker of the seminar via a live video link was Dr. James Hansen, Director of NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies and one of the world’s foremost scientists on climate change. An audience member asked him: “How much time have we left?” And he replied: “Next year (2009)  is critical. The young and the unborn are the ones that are going to suffer and witness the largest effects, if we don’t take immediate action.” He added being vegetarian would certainly help to cut down on global warming.

Over 300 SOS DVDs and writing pens were distributed at the Climate Change conference and later in Cork city centre.
