Veg Message Reaches Far and Wide

Report compiled by fellow initiates in China (Originally in Chinese)

[Guangdong] In an effort to promote the Be Veg, Go Green message, fellow initiates in Guangdong Province printed large quantities of Alternative Living, SOS/Climate Change, and Be Veg-Go Green-Save the Earth leaflets, and distributed them in cities, towns and suburbs throughout the province. They also inserted the leaflets in newspapers, participated in exhibitions, and held educational activities with kindergartens.

On November 5, Golden Year 5 (2008), the fellow initiates signed a three-month contract with city bus stations to advertise the information on overhead handholds of buses on 10 different routes. After reading the Be Veg-Go Green-Save the Earth booklet and viewing the DVD, the manager of the bus advertising agency was moved to tears. With great emotion, he said, “The Earth really needs all of us to work together to preserve it!” He then offered an extra month of free advertising.

[Yunnan] At the Literature Forum held at Yunnan Normal University on October 8, university lecturer and brother initiate Li gave a talk on “Challenge Tradition, Do Not Be Misled and Develop a Scientific Concept of the Diet.” Fellow initiates distributed relevant information and prepared vegetarian food for the participating students. Citing scientific evidence, Mr. Li said that the human body is suitable for ingesting plant-based protein, and went on to explain the link between the vegetarian diet and environmental protection. This interesting discussion led the students to reflect on their diet and lifestyle. Many decided to immediately begin a vegetarian lifestyle.

On October 18, at the West Hill Magnolia Garden, Yunnan initiates joined the environmental group Golden Age Roots and Sprouts, and the environmental protection clubs of Yunnan Normal University and Kunming Medical University in holding an ecological preservation and vegetarian food-tasting event. Over 1,500 SOS fliers and more than 100 portions of vegetarian food were handed out.

[Guizhou] In early October, with the loving support of the Yunnan initiates, Association members in Guizhou launched a series of Be Veg-Go Green-Save the Earth activities. On weekends and holidays, they distributed informative materials to people on the streets, in bus and railway stations, and other places frequented by large crowds. The materials informed people that being nice to the Earth is being nice to themselves, and it takes the concerted effort of everyone to save the Earth.

[Hubei] On Animal Day, October 4, volunteer workers from the Wuhan Salvation Center for Homeless Pets held a public-benefit activity, appealing to people to love and care for the animals, and to refuse eating cat and dog meat. Fliers and posters introducing the vegetarian diet and the living conditions of animals were displayed. Free vegetarian meals were provided to volunteers participating in the event.

Volunteer workers wearing dog masks experience a brief moment of confinement. Fellow initiates distribute placards introducing the vegetarian diet.

[Shaanxi] In support of Animal Day, fellow initiates in Shaanxi conducted promotional activities in city squares and on major roads to encourage people to love animals and observe a plant-based diet to save the planet. Large amounts of informative materials were distributed and vegetarian snacks prepared for the people. The activity was highly acclaimed and some university students offered to help in the distribution work.

Fellow initiates again promoted the plant-based diet during a Buddhist congregation at Qingliang Temple to the south of Xian on October 5. Many Buddhist practitioners agreed that the vegetarian diet can save the planet. Most of them said they would help spread the message and invite more people to join the vegetarian family.

[Jiangxi]  From October 10 to 13, the Ministry of Commerce and the People’s Government of Jiangxi Province jointly convened the China Green Food Expo, with the support of the China Green Food Development Center, at the Nanchang International Exhibition Center. More that 1,800 enterprises participated in the event, which attracted over 100,000 visitors.

Many visitors stopped to read the SOS fliers they received. They also watched “Devour the Earth” and other videos and tasted the delicious vegetarian food on offer. The local media were highly interested in the vegetarian diet and its association with global warming. Nanchang Television reporters covered the topic and asked for relevant information. We hope that after attending the Expo, more people will Be Veg, Go Green, and Save the Planet!

[Sichuan] October was World Vegetarian Month. Local initiates did their best to share the message of Be Veg, Go Green, Save the Planet. On October 4, they distributed SOS fliers, DVDs and other information in cities and neighboring counties and towns, which were warmly accepted by the people.

The Double Ninth Festival, or Senior Citizens’ Day, which fell on October 7 this year, is an important Chinese festival. On this day, fellow initiates prepared delicious vegetarian food for an elderly home in the earthquake-affected area. The senior citizens enjoyed the food and learned the importance of the vegetarian diet. On October 19, a group of fellow initiates attended a vegetarian birthday feast in a remote mountain region in Sichuan, where they shared the vegetarian message with over a hundred guests. We hope these activities will inspire more people to become vegetarian.
