Serious Reminder to Extinguish Global Warming
By Turkey Relief Team (Originally in English)

On July 31, 2008, the largest forest fire in Turkey’s history broke out in Manavgat town of the southern province of Antalya and was eventually brought under control after a six-day effort by fire-fighting teams. Six villages were evacuated in this fire that destroyed at least 60 houses, dozens of farming buildings, a school and a mosque in Manavgat and Serik towns. More than US$1 billion in damages were caused and about 4,000-4,500 hectares of forest land with 2.5 million trees were burnt.

Upon receiving Master’s instructions and repeated concern, fellow initiates from Turkey and Singapore visited the disaster area to offer their help and convey Master’s love. They were happy to find the affected villagers well looked after at temporary housing with basic necessities and amenities. Using 1,854 euros (US$2,624) out of Master’s 10,000 euros (US$14,150) contribution, the relief team immediately bought and delivered necessary items like utensils for bread-making and also handed out small gifts to the villagers in an effort to help lessen their agony and brighten up their faces.

To increase the awareness about the environment we live in, flyers on the current global warming crisis were also given out together with sample booklets to comfort their souls. Hot weather and lack of rain had left Turkey’s extensive woodland vulnerable to wildfires. This tragic event serves as another good reminder to all governments and individuals that we should help extinguish a bigger fire (global warming) and that the adoption of an eco-friendly and peaceful vegetarian lifestyle is the quickest way to save this beautiful planet of ours.
