By a fellow initiate in China (Originally in Chinese)

Foreword: Not long ago on the Internet in China, there was news that had circulated extensively about the endeavours of a Mr. Jin Dan saving stray dogs in Inner Mongolia (an autonomous region in China). The terrifying reports and photos on the Internet shocked and stirred the hearts of many compassionate people who were concerned about animal rights. Hoping to save these helpless animals, fellow initiates in China joined forces and extended their best efforts to help the dogs.

The abandoned dogs found a temporary abode at Mr. Jin Dan’s place.

Since August of last year when Baotou City of Inner Mongolia intensified pet control, the number of abandoned dogs increased significantly. A dog lover, Mr. Jin Dan was concerned about these homeless dogs, and started adopting them quietly. One day, in the Police Station, he saw several dogs being confined in a cage. They looked filthy and ugly with tangled hair all over, and looked at Jin Dan with pleading eyes. When he learnt that the police temporarily had no means to handle the dogs, he requested to take them home for temporary care and accommodation. Since then, the police have sent all the unlicensed pets they’ve found to Mr. Jin Dan’s dog pound. At first, Jin Dan still thought: “Surely the dog caretakers could not bear to part with their pets! Sooner or later they will come to take them home.” However, as days passed by, dogs continued to be sent to him from various police units, the public and even the dog caretakers, but very few people came to adopt the dogs. By June of this year, just the police alone had sent him more than 600 dogs, and over a thousand dogs had lived in his accommodation center. As the place was small, sometimes 200 or more dogs had to squeeze into a 10 square meter house. As a result, there were contagious diseases and fights for survival among the dogs.

Though rather crude, the wooden sheds provide the dogs with shelter against the wind, rain and sun.
Dog food contributed by kind people.

To help these animals, fellow initiates launched fund raising and adoption efforts. One day in July, fellow initiates from Jiling Province and Liaoning Province lined up at the Shenyang railway station waiting for the arrival of a train from Baotou. They were there to greet the 120 dogs that they had adopted. While waiting, they silently recited the Holy Names and prayed for the little darlings. Finally they arrived accompanied by Mr. Jin Dan, who looked quite dejected. However, when talking about saving the stray dogs, he was resolute and said, “No matter how difficult it is, I will continue with what I am doing.” Fellow initiates had prepared ample food and water for the animals. After taking a brief rest, about 80 dogs going to Changchun in Jilin Province continued on their journey by car. When they arrived, the anxiously waiting fellow initiates rushed forward and greeted the dogs like greeting their own kids. Thanks to Master’s love and blessing, despite the 30 hour long journey, these little fellows were still lively and cute. We are grateful to Master for giving us this opportunity to care for these little darlings.
Kind at heart, Mr. Jin Dan is a man of few words who loves the dogs more than himself

In August, another 64 dogs reached Changchun and met the same warm welcome by fellow initiates. This time, Mr. Jin Dan was all smiles and cheerful. It happened that, ever since Master had cared about these needy animal friends, gradually more and more people came to adopt the dogs. The local Buddhist Society adopted 200 of them, the Catholic Society adopted 100, and many of the local inhabitants also sent in donations. Mr. Jin Dan said, “Now there are only about 30 puppies left, some of which will be adopted by the local people in the future. After that, there will be still 17 sick dogs and I should be able to take care of them. You don’t need to give me contributions anymore.”

Fellow initiates had deep sympathy with these unfortunate dogs and they were determined not to hurt their feelings. Therefore, during the adoption process, none of them discriminated or preferred one dog over another. Whichever dog the working members allocated to them, they hugged them happily and then brought home this lovely gift bestowed by God. Five of the small dogs refused to come out of the cage despite all efforts, so fellow initiates had to take them home in the cage. There, the benevolent and loving atmosphere of the fellow initiates touched them and they finally came out voluntarily. Once again, they enjoyed warm loving care and happiness.

Through this incident, Master trained us to develop our compassion and let us understand how to respect lives in all forms. Now, when fellow initiates see each other, their favorite topic of conversation is how lovely our dogs are at home, and how much joy they have brought us. These 180 darlings have now become our best friends and indispensable members of our Quan Yin family. Fellow initiates are fully aware that what they have saved are not just little animals, as seen by others, but our best companions.

Dogs adopted by fellow initiates started a new life under a loving environment:
