Creating a Compassionate and Vegetarian Global Village

Making the World a Bright and Peaceful Place

By the Kuala Lumpur News Group, Malaysia (Originally in Chinese)

Responding to Master’s compassionate ideal of promoting vegetarianism, our Centers all over the world are actively engaged in distributing the Alternative Living flyers. The Kuala Lumpur Center in Malaysia also printed many flyers in March of Golden Year 3 (2006) and has been working to share this message through different channels.

We first placed the Alternative Living message in the most popular Chinese newspaper in Malaysia, and went to distribute the flyers at crowded places such as shopping malls, shops, vegetarian restaurants, marketplaces, bus stops, subway stations, parks and parking lots. Big posters were also put up at vegetarian restaurants, book shops, western pharmacies and Chinese medicine outlets, and we also placed flyers inside. Most vegetarian restaurants highly supported and welcomed Master’s Alternative Living ideal, especially the information about vegetarian Nobel Prize laureates and famous scientists. One vegetarian lady who owned a bookshop highly praised Master’s loving and noble acts, and volunteered to insert the Alternative Living flyers in the store’s books and magazines, free of charge. She also disseminated flyers to her relatives and friends and encouraged people to join in sharing this message. A vegetarian veterinarian who ran a pet clinic was very impressed by the compassionate flyers so exquisitely designed by Master and gave us support.

After every Sunday’s group meditation, fellow initiates in Kuala Lumpur divided into groups and went to crowded places to distribute flyers. One day, when we were distributing outside a shopping mall, a volunteer worker was also there raising funds for disabled people. After getting a flyer from us and reading it, he unexpectedly set aside his own fund-raising work and earnestly joined us in distributing the flyers. Finally, he took a big stack of flyers and went to another shopping center across the street, where he continued to distribute the flyers. Seeing his enthusiasm in joining our noble activity, we felt grateful to God’s incredible arrangement. Some fellow initiates, in addition to disseminating the flyers to relatives, friends and co-workers, also displayed them in their workplace, and they noted that their colleagues had been eating more vegetarian meals.

A two-day International Book Fair was held at the Putra World Trade Center in Kuala Lumpur from April 15 to 16. Fellow initiates immediately seized this opportunity and distributed almost 10,000 flyers in a very short time.

Eastern Coast Region

From April 22 to 24, five fellow initiates went to distribute flyers at the Eastern Coast regions of three states: Terengganu, Kelantan and Pahang, areas where there was no Center and the local habitants were mostly Malaysians. Although Kelantan is administered under Muslim law, people of different ethnic groups live together in harmony. The inhabitants were happy to receive the flyers, and they read the contents immediately. Their rate of acceptance was higher than we expected! Some Malay compatriots even asked further questions about the concept of a healthy and proper diet, and when the owner of a Chinese medicine dispensary learnt that we had come all the way from Kuala Lumpur to distribute the flyers, he asked us to leave some in his shop to disseminate to his customers.

On the next day, when fellow initiates arrived in Terengannu, there were hardly any crowds visible. Therefore, they left 4,000 flyers on cars parked on the streets and in the parking lots. As the Muslims are very sensitive towards pigs, fellow initiates patiently explained to them that the pig is put on the flyer to remind people not to eat pork anymore. After listening to our explanation, they all gladly accepted the flyers.

Finally, at Pahang State, God arranged that five local initiates joined the Kuala Lumpur group at Kuantan, the state’s capital. When we were distributing the flyers in different areas of Kuantan, local people were very curious and asked us about the content of the flyer. It was a very hot day and fellow initiates became red-faced and profusely sweating under the direct sun. However, we were not intimidated but instead worked even harder, and within one morning we finished distributing all 8,000 flyers.

Sarawak

From June 9 to 13, fellow initiates went to Sarawak State to distribute flyers in Miri, Bintulu, Sibu, Sarikei and Bintangor. Many people responded positively and some were interested in Master’s teachings. A gentleman even volunteered to drive us to the most crowded places and left his telephone number with us so we could contact him if we needed his help.

It was raining on June 10, so a brother initiate discussed with the owner of a bookshop the possibility of paying him to disseminate the flyers along with the newspapers he was selling. This owner, a Malay Muslim, after reading the contents of the flyer, promptly consented and even said that humans should be vegetarians in the first place. The response from this shop owner changed the brother’s previous impression that it was difficult for Muslims to accept the vegetarian concept. Another young Malay was an owner of a meat restaurant due to the local people having no idea about vegetarianism. He had often hoped to find ways to change their dietary habits. After reading the flyer, he said excitedly that this message was very timely and had fulfilled his wish.

On June 11, when we went to distribute flyers at a commercial area in Sibu, we again encountered a torrential rain. However, with the consent of a department store manager, we went into the store to distribute flyers. When the broadcaster of the store received the flyer and read the content, he strongly supported Master’s compassionate vegetarian ideal. He even enthusiastically made an announcement: “A group of young persons is distributing flyers promoting a healthy vegetarian ideal, so that our dear customers can understand the benefit of a vegetarian diet, understand the meaning of not killing and live a healthy, compassionate lifestyle full of joy and love. If you want to know more, please take the flyer and read it carefully.” We were very touched by his speech and also grateful to Master for sending this angel to help us. As a result, we were more spirited in distributing, and the people were in turn more sincere and grateful in accepting the flyers. We later gave the broadcaster a copy of Master’s sample book, publications and some beverages to express our gratitude.

In Sarikei and Bintangor, we noticed that a high percentage of the local inhabitants accepted the flyers, and most of them were very cordial and polite in telling us that they acknowledged the vegetarian ideal. In one teahouse, we met four elders from the Iban tribe who were enjoying tea and chatting. Upon receiving the flyer, they read it immediately and told us that they consumed very little meat in their diet. When we advised them that their lifestyle would become more perfect if they could completely abandon meat, they said they greatly appreciated this suggestion. Later, they asked us to give them more flyers so that they could convey Master’s compassionate message to their tribespeople.

A sister initiate went to a primary school and asked the vice-principal’s permission to distribute Alternative Living flyers in the school. After reading the flyer himself, the vice-principal not only consented, he reminded her to hurry so that all the students in the morning school would receive one, because it was almost time for the morning school to end. Overjoyed, we immediately began to distribute, grateful for Master’s blessing that helped us to convey Master’s love to these young and pure students. We further noted that all the students kept the flyers properly after receiving them.

Conclusion

While we were distributing the flyers, many people expressed their gratitude and praise to us. Actually, we are the ones who should be grateful. It is because of them that we had the opportunity to do this noble task and use our wisdom, through which we can gauge the progress we have made in our spiritual practice after following Master for such a long time. Whenever we finished distributing all the flyers in our hands, our hearts would overflow with such joy that we could hardly contain the gleeful expression on our faces. No words could possibly describe our bliss within! We are thankful to Master for allowing us to successfully share God’s love for all sentient beings. With Master’s continued blessing, this world will become brighter and more peaceful, and all sentient beings will eventually live together in harmony.
