A Wellspring of Love
Strengthens Faith in Master

In August 2004 Typhoon Aere triggered major mudslides, washing rocks, soil and trees into the Shihmen Reservoir and causing heavy sediment to clog the local water supply system. Thus the residents of southern Taoyuan were left without water for more than two weeks. For the initiates of Taoyuan, who follow Supreme Master Ching Hai in practicing the Quan Yin Method, this ordeal offered insights into Master's great compassion and the altruistic spirit of their local center.

In 2002, Formosa was hit by a severe water shortage, and when Formosan initiates were in the United States for a retreat around that time, Master suggested that they drill wells to help alleviate the situation. In retrospect, this "casual suggestion" by Master revealed Her superb foresight.

Fortunately, there was already a well at the Taoyuan Center so none needed to be drilled. But upon receiving news of the water shortage in southern Taoyuan, the local contact person immediately recalled Master's comment, and so informed all the fellow initiates in the affected areas that they could fetch water from the Taoyuan well. At group meditation sessions, the following announcement was repeated: "We're all members of the big Quan Yin family so the water at the Taoyuan Center belongs to everyone. Initiates in the region are welcome to use the water there. Let's overcome this ordeal together." As soon as this touching message spread, many fellow practitioners not only came to fetch water, but also brought their families to the Center to bathe, wash vegetables and do laundry. For two weeks people shared the water day and night in a true familial spirit. The loving service offered by the Taoyuan Center warmed the hearts of local fellow initiates and brought them closer together.

The water shortage also provided insights into the ephemeral and unpredictable nature of physical existence. "In this world of illusion, disasters strike continuously and catch us unprepared," said several initiates. But words of gratitude also came forth. For example, one sister who had washed her vegetables at the Taoyuan Center's well said, "Fortunately, we're one big Quan Yin family!" In such trying situations, all initiates need to be sincerely grateful that they are following a truly enlightened Master in spiritual practice, Who guides them through this world of fleeting happiness to finally return to their eternal Home!
