A Happy Grandmother

I remember, many years ago in my homeland, Hungary, I played a Christmas carol on my elementary school's piano. The next day, the communist secret police took me away from the school for questioning, asking me why I had played the Christmas carol and who had taught me the music. After a lengthy reprimand, they let me go with a warning not to do it again. I also liked to go to the local church for a short prayer each morning before I went to school. I was just eight years old at the time, and was questioned again by the secret police about why I was going to the church, who had told me to go, who had taught me to pray, why I sang Christmas carols in public, etc.

When I finished elementary school, I was told by the principal that, due to my unacceptable behavior, I would not be able to go to high school to further my education. "Do not try," she said, "because, due to your religious background the state will not allow it." But nonetheless, my guardian angel helped me to get into high school, which I finished, and then I went further on to college. To my sorrow, however, in 1956, my whole world was turned upside down. The Hungarian freedom struggle of that year stopped my education in Hungary, because my father had participated in the fighting, and so we had to flee our home and country along with my mother and one year-old brother. Once again, my guardian angel was by my side, and helped us over the strictly guarded Hungarian border to freedom.

Now much older and wiser, I live in Australia with my loving family, and am a happy grandmother of 13 grandchildren. My happiness received an unexpected boost when, during the Christmas season of 1999, my 81 year-old mother told me that she was having good inner experiences with the inner light when practicing the Convenient Method of meditation. Master is really looking after my family!

I was initiated eight months ago. Since then, my daughter has given up smoking, my son does not drink as much as he used to, and to top it all, my brother, who lives 2500 km. away, recently came and visited us. We had not seen each other in eight years, and I could not believe my eyes when I saw him! He had changed for the better during this absence. His personality had become better, and his outlook on life was brighter. Thus, I invited him to come with me to our local group meditation session. At first, he turned me down, but I insisted, "If you want to know me better, come and see our group, how we meditate, how we enjoy each others' company, and how meditation gives one inner peace and a good feeling." Finally, he gave in and came to group meditation with me. We then had a very happy evening, joking and laughing constantly. On his way home he hugged me, thanked me for inviting him, and said , "You know Sis, I like this meditation group".

When he returned home, he called me on the phone, which was a big surprise, because he had never called me before, due to the cost. But that day he did! It was a Monday, our center's meditation day. He told me, "Sis I love you, and I love your meditation group friends. Please tell them that I miss them all. If a meditation group were here, I would join it, but to my sorrow, no such group exists here". I was overwhelmed with joy, and nearly cried.

Thank You, Master, for changing my life and my family for the better! I love You more and more as time goes by.

Practicing is reviewing oneself daily, keeping precepts clearly, doing good deeds and not doing bad deeds, meditating daily, observing our own wisdom, cultivating our own compassionate heart, and realizing the Truth silently. This is then considered practicing.
